Stalactites of chios The cave of Olympus (or Sykia cave) is located in the southern part of the island, near the village of Olympus and not far from the villages of Pyrgi and Mesta. In 1985 it was explored by the Hellenic Speleological Society and since 2003 it is open to the public.

It is located at an altitude of 100 meters above sea level and is a cavern with a depth of up to 55 meters. Although small in size, the cave of Olympus has an exceptional interior decoration of stalactites and stalagmites that ranks it among the most remarkable in Greece. The stalactites and stalagmites of the cave are created by the chemical deposition of calcium carbonate transported by the water that enters the cave from the rain.
